“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.

John 14:1 NASB

If I could make a wish for everyone in the coming year it would be for each person to have a troubled less heart through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Could you grow in lasting peace this year? I think you can. I would like everyone to have much less anxiety and stress in their lives, but I know if Jesus Christ is not present in them, they have no power for long-term success. Even the best practices of thought control, breathing, and deep meditation turn out to be forms of self-medication. They may be great aids, but we humans need outside help. We need an intervention that can change our heart, our perspective and offer us lasting peace.

In the verse above Jesus is giving encouragement and a strategy to His disciples who are about to go through some of the worst things in their lives. They are going to be heartbroken, face defeat and rejection, encounter the evil in their own hearts, be betrayed by a close friend and experience death of a loved one.

In the face of all those fear-inducing events, Jesus prewarns and encourages them to believe. Not just believe, as in having hope, but to believe in Him. To believe, trust and look for how the person of Jesus will come to them, live in them and show them the way of life. That is exactly what Jesus does through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit, His Spirit.

This year you can fight fear and anxiety in your life by increasing your communion with the presence of God through an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ via the Holy Spirit. It’s a trinitarian thing. This fearless living is not something that a person obtains in one moment. But it is something that any one of us can start in a moment. Here is a great starting place.

  1. Do not let your heart be troubled. What happens in your heart is up to you. God has given you the power to watch over your own heart. No person, politics, rules, attacks or rejection can rule your heart. You do. The first step is seeing the truth and possibility of being a powerful person and taking responsibility for your own heart.
  2. Believe in God. Believe in a God who made the world, who holds the world in His power. A God who works in ways we can somewhat comprehend and trust. You are free from the burden of being the God of this world. You are free from the pressure to figure it all out. No need to be perfect. Trust God to keep the world going and start to enjoy more freedom in living in the world He has made.
  3. If God reveals to us the creator, Jesus reveals to us a brother and friend. Jesus was such a brother that He gave up his life so that we might live the best lives possible. Believe that Jesus personally cares for you. Believe that Jesus wants you to succeed, to have hope. Believe that Jesus, even when faced with rejection and betrayal, forgives, restores and seeks to heal broken hearts and lives.
  4.

That’s the starting place for increased fearless living. It starts with you seeking to rule your own heart under the God of creation and the brotherhood of Jesus. You can do this. Not on your own but with the help, wisdom, and direction of the Holy Spirit. Here is a passage of Scripture to ponder.

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. “After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
